Sean BaileyI am currently interning at Rogers Communications on the Social Media and Digital Communications team. As a disclaimer, the opinions I express on my site are in no way related to those of my employers.

In June 2009 I officially graduated from the Public Relations program at Centennial College and I have to say I’m putting the skills I learned there to good use.

Many communications people I’ve spoken to have a background in journalism; I’m no different. I’m a grad of Centennial’s three-year Journalism Program. Knowing so many people in the PR profession have a background in journalism, made joining the CC & PR program more worthwhile. I figured if I could take the base knowledge of what I learned in J-school and apply it with my new found PR skills, I could put myself at an advantage, which is always beneficial in a competitive industry such as PR.

I was also fortunate enough to do my interning in the Public Affairs department of the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC). It was a seemingly weird fit for a journalism student to go write for an in-house publication, but it got me hooked on the idea of a career in CC & PR.

Fast forward to the summer of 2008 and I landed a two-and-half month position with Toronto EMS as the media assistant. This opportunity benefited me the most because I learned so much over the summer. That’s made the transition to CC & PR school seamless, in many ways.

Nearing the end of my program I did my internship at Agito Internet Marketing. While there, I learned a lot about the uses of Search Engine Marketing (SEM), wrote web content for clients, an SEM white paper and an Online News Release primer. The tools I learned at Agito, while not all directly PR related, are important in the digital world of communications that I’m interested in and I’m happy I had a chance to learn them with such a great group of people.

Outside of the professional arena I’m an avid book reader. For the past five years I’ve always had a book in hand. Reading helps keep my brain functioning at times, as well as keeping occupied during the long trips home to Scarborough on the TTC. I used to read pretty much any kind of book I came across, but the past couple years have seen a shift to those that are a little more thought provoking.
